‘The Fault in Our Stars’ star Shailene Woodley is outspoken about the Jennifer Lawrence comparisons, nude sex scenes in ‘White Bird in a Blizzard’ and many other spicy topics for ‘New York Magazine,’ as she shares both the cover and the interview for same with her friend Brie Larson whom she met on the set of ‘The Spectacular Now.’
The cover story and its inside photos offer a fascinating duo portrait of two stars who have been dubbed “unconventional” and who are close friends. Shailene Woodley is getting the lion’s share of the attention at the moment as a part of the publicity blitz for ‘The Fault in Our Stars,’ in which she co-stars with Ansel Elgort.
The 22-year-old has solidified her A list status portraying the strong female Tris Prior in ‘Divergent’ the first of a trilogy of movies based on the bestselling YA dystopian thriller of the same title by Veronica Roth. Thus even before taking on the co-starring role in ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ based John Green’s bestselling novel of the same title she had come headlong into comparisons with another A lister, Jennifer Lawrence.
In the wide ranging interview she talks at length on many subjects, not least what some might see as her unconventional lifestyle — being without a permanent home and opting instead to couch surfing isn’t what the public thinks of when it thinks Hollywood movie star, after all — but what she says in response to the tiresome comparisons will raise eyebrows as it should.
The New York Magazine article quotes from a scene we never saw on television when Jimmy Fallon was the one who asked her what it was like being compared to Jennifer Lawrence on ‘The Tonight Show.’ In fact, her very candid response was deleted from the broadcast.
The magazine quotes her as saying the “comparisons always lead to despair” which did not go over so well with the studio audience; that is to say they began to boo.
But Shailene Woodley did not back down. She went on to say, “As women, we are constantly told that we need to compare ourselves to a girl in school, to our co-workers, to the images in a magazine…How is the world going to advance if we’re always comparing ourselves to others? I admire Jennifer Lawrence, but she’s everyone’s favorite person to compare me to. Is it because we both have short hair and a vagina? I see us as separate individuals. And that’s important. As women, our insecurities are based on all these comparisons. And that creates distress.”
Woodley reflected upon this and told New York magazine, ““It bothered me, because it’s human nature to feel bad if you are booed by an entire audience…But in these few moments that we have here on Earth, are we going to torture ourselves? Or are we going to allow our lights to be dimmed? How do we expect men to respect women or women to rise to more power when we don’t respect our queendom in the same way that men respect their kingdom?”
Strong and forceful points, and, in retrospect, not a surprise that her words wound up on the proverbial cutting room floor.
She spoke out on another topic that will be remembered from the interview; the nude sex scenes she did for ‘White Bird in a Blizzard’ which opens in theaters later this year.
She said, “It was so much fun…Everyone was freaked out because I’m nude, but in real life, when I have sex, I’m naked. I don’t have a bra on, and I don’t usually have panties on. So let’s make a real movie! Let’s bring truth to the scene! I didn’t want to be exploited, but this girl—like most girls when they first have sex—doesn’t know what she’s doing.” She went on to say, “I wanted their first kiss to be sloppy, teenagerish making out. When you’re younger, you think you know what to do, but you really don’t.”
