Windows 8: Jack of All Trades, Master of None?

There just doesn't seem to be any rest for the weary here in the Linux blogosphere lately, what with the release of Ubuntu Linux 12.10 "Quantal Quetzal" last week and the "Rectangle with Rounded Corners" 5 not long before that. Next up? Well, it's Windows 8, which officially launches on Friday. FOSS fans' hackles have already been raised by the Secure Boot saga, of course, and the growing din of fanfare over in the neighboring Redmond territories is doing nothing to settle them.

Samsung gets official with the Galaxy Premier 465inch HD Super AMOLED, 8MP camera, GS III styling

If Samsung took a wrong turn with its brand-diluting Galaxy S III Mini, then the much-leaked Galaxy Premier is where it gets back on track. The phone keeps the outward visage of the Galaxy S III and makes only modest sacrifices in order to reach a wider audience. These include a slightly shrunken 4.65-inch screen, which still blazes away with a full 720 x 1,280 Super AMOLED panel, an acceptable dual-core 1.5 GHz TI OMAP 4470 processor, 1GB of RAM and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The cameras haven't been messed with -- we're still looking at an 8-megapixel rear and a 1.9-megapixel front-facer -- while connectivity includes Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. So far, the phone has only been made official in the Ukraine, where it's been pegged for a November release and priced at 5,555 Ukrainian hryvnias -- an exotic-sounding figure that very roughly translates to $680.

Words With Friends for Android updated, promises "smoother game experience"

wordswithfriends
As several of you noted in the comments to our post asking for cross-platform iOS/Android games, Words With Friends for Android does not provide the smoothest gaming experience... and that's being rather charitable.

You might be happy to hear that a couple of days ago Zynga released an update which promises to solve many of the Android-specific issues, such as notifications not popping up.

Sadly, installing the update is not a smooth experience; you have to manually uninstall the previous version, and then go to the Android Market and install it. What's nice is that it doesn't lose your saved games - this screenshot shows a game I've started before the update and continued after updating.

How's the new update working out for you? Let us know in the comments!

Keep Track of Hurricane Sandy with Google Crisis Maps

Hurricane Sandy is coming and Google has created a crisis map that will hopefully help prepare you for the impact if you live in an area that may or will be affected by it. The map includes multiple layers including the storms current position, 3 day cone forecast, river flood outlooks, emergency shelters and evacuation routes amongst other things. Many layers can also be downloaded as .kmz files for use with Google Maps as well. Here’s hoping that technology can help minimize the effect on human lives.  Hopefully all Gadgeteers in the affected areas are safe and prepared.

Netflix now available on Amazon Kindle Fire in the UK

Android Central

Despite the Amazon Kindle Fire in the UK coming with Amazon's own LOVEFiLM service baked in, that hasn't stopped rivals Netflix trying to muscle in. Netflix is now available to download from the Amazon Appstore for British Kindle Fire owners.

The experience and content catalog is exactly the same as on regular Android devices, giving new Kindle Fire owners in Britain their choice of streaming providers. Both LOVEFiLM and Netflix come with free trials too, so be sure to check them both out first before committing your cash.

AT&T and TMobile temporarily share networks in New York City and New Jersey, shoulder the posthurricane load

Communication has been all too spotty across much of New York City and New Jersey since Hurricane Sandy struck the region, and those who can get through on their cellphones have found themselves on particularly crowded networks. AT&T and T-Mobile are providing some much-needed, if temporary, relief: the two have struck a deal to share their GSM and 3G networks in the area with no roaming fees or plan changes while the networks come back, with the best-functioning network taking precedence in any given connection. A return to the normal state of affairs hasn't been fixed in stone and will likely depend on many, many factors, but it's a much appreciated gesture for residents who might not have a choice to relocate for a vital phone call.

SOLOSHOT – Get yourself in the action

Can’t find a camera person willing to film all your heroic exploits?  SOLOSHOT has you covered. The SOLOSHOT sits between your camera and tripod (included) and uses a wireless waterproof armband to track its subject.  It’s capable of rotating 360 degrees with a maximum pan speed of 40 degrees per second. Range is up to 2000 feet (600 m), and it’s been tested with a racing car up to 143 mph (230 kmh).  It has a 5 hour battery life.

Of course you do need to set your tilt and zoom manually before you begin, and you might still actually need someone to sit and look after it so it doesn’t go missing (it can be chained to an immovable object). :)

The unit is available direct from SOLOSHOT for  $479.

Corel releases VideoStudio Pro X4, we go hands on (video)

videostudioprox4
Corel seems to be on a roll lately; after releasing WinZip System Utilities just last week, this morning the company announced VideoStudio Pro X4.

VideoStudio Pro is aimed at home users and small business professionals who want to create professional-looking videos, but without the hassle, steep learning curve and price of Adobe Premiere Pro and the likes.

This new version introduces several features:
  • Stop motion animation: You can now capture still frames using a webcam, camcorder or DSLR and use them to produce an animation. Tools such as "onion skin view" let you compare the previous image in the sequence with the current one and make the animation as smooth as possible.
  • Processor optimization: Corel says the app is optimized for Intel's new Sandy Bridge systems, and have shown us some graphs with very impressive numbers. We've been unable to test this particular point, but if you have a recent-generation Intel or AMD Fusion system, VideoStudio performance should be blazing. Even on our older test system performance was quite impressive.
  • Customizable workspace: You can drag the video preview window to your secondary monitor (if you have one) and tweak just about any other element in the window layout. Once done, you can save your ideal workspace in one of three slots.
  • Share-to-Web: VideoStudio Pro X4 hooks directly into YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook and Flickr, so you don't even have to launch a browser to upload your final product. Edit, produce and share from within the app itself.
  • Smart Package: Video projects typically consist of many files; Smart Package lets you bundle all video assets for a given project into one ZIP file which you can password-protect and keep in a safe place once you're done editing.
I've had a chance to play around with a pre-release version for a few days, and have put it through its paces editing a short video for my day job. Overall, I've been impressed with how easy it was to create pro-looking results. If you do any sort of video editing but are leery of the investment other apps require (both in dollars and effort), VideoStudio Pro is well worth checking out. To see a bit of the interface itself and what the app can do, watch the video after the jump.

Note: We'll be running a give-away of ten VideoStudio Pro X4 licenses later today, each worth $100 USD. Keep your eyes peeled for the giveaway post!

Android 4.2 camera, gallery ported to Galaxy Nexus running Jelly Bean 4.1.1

DNP Android 42 camera, gallery ported to Galaxy Nexus running Jelly Bean411

So, you're loving the new gallery and camera options we saw on Jelly Bean 4.2 and have no intention of waiting for that OS for your former flagship Galaxy Nexus? A certain dmmarck on Android Central's forums has sorted that, and you can now grab the camera app for your so-last-month 4.1.1 OS on that handset. Other than a Photo Sphere bug, it's apparently working like the factory version, but newbies beware -- the installation requires some Android hacking chops. You can grab it at the source.

Nexus 7 sales clocking in at close to a million per month

DNP It's official, Nexus 7 sales clocking in at close to a million a month

While it was pretty clear that ASUS' Google-partnered Nexus 7 contributed heavily to the Taiwanese maker's healthy Q3 results, there was no official confirmation on its exact sales figures so far. ASUS CFO David Chang has now come clean and told the WSJ that the 7-incher is close to touching the one million per month mark, just about double the rate of sales at its launch. While this number is a fraction of the iPad's sales (14 million in the last quarter alone), it could well go up due to the recent price drop and the addition of new 32GB models to the portfolio. On the flip side, the Nexus 7 is sure to face heat from close rivals, the Kindle Fire HD and the 7.9-inch Apple iPad mini, while the mega-spec Nexus 10 will also entice some buyers away from ASUS' reach.

Updated Google Search on iOS on par with Android

Google Search

Google today let loose a new version of its Search app for iOS devices. Is it as good as the voice search you find in Android and Google Now? When it comes to results, yes. That is to say, when we took Google's test questions for a spin, using Google Now to launch the search (just because we felt like it) we got the same results -- in just about the same response time -- on a Galaxy Nexus as we did on iOS 6.

Why'd we use the same questions Google highlighted on its blog post announcing the update? For one simple reason: Siri, for want of an better term, sucks. And anyone who's ever tried to do the same searches Apple showcased in its advertisements is quite possibly still waiting for an answer. So we wanted to put Google's examples to the test. And we threw in one wild card at the end.

How'd they stack up? Pretty evenly matched, I think. You'd expect the results to be the same, of course. Response time is what I was really curious about. Have a gander at the video after the break and see for yourself.

Apple delays iTunes 11 refresh until the end of November

Apple delays iTunes 11 refresh until the end of NovemberDisappointing news today for those eagerly awaiting the promised October launch of iTunes 11. Apple has just announced that it has had to delay its release until the end of November. Apple talked about the iTunes 11 refresh back in September at the iPhone 5 media event and said that it would be out by the end of October. All Things D has received a statement from Apple spokesperson Tom Neumayr.

The new iTunes is taking longer than expected and we wanted to take a little extra time to get it right. We look forward to releasing this new version of iTunes with its dramatically simpler and cleaner interface, and seamless integration with iCloud before the end of November.

Very disappointing news but it is better that Apple delayed it now rather than releasing a version that would prove to be buggy and problematic; Apple doesn't need any more bad press in this regard. Delaying it for a month to iron out these problems is certainly the sensible route to take. It's doubtful that the delay has anything to do with the managerial changes which were announced yesterday especially as Scott Forstall had very little to do with iTunes; Eddy Cue is the man in charge of that. The refresh of iTunes includes a cleaner design, much needed performance improvements, better iCloud integration, enhanced library search and a redesigned mini-player.

Were you looking forward to getting your hands on the refreshed iTunes 11 this week?
