Words With Friends for Android updated, promises "smoother game experience"

wordswithfriends
As several of you noted in the comments to our post asking for cross-platform iOS/Android games, Words With Friends for Android does not provide the smoothest gaming experience... and that's being rather charitable.

You might be happy to hear that a couple of days ago Zynga released an update which promises to solve many of the Android-specific issues, such as notifications not popping up.

Sadly, installing the update is not a smooth experience; you have to manually uninstall the previous version, and then go to the Android Market and install it. What's nice is that it doesn't lose your saved games - this screenshot shows a game I've started before the update and continued after updating.

How's the new update working out for you? Let us know in the comments!

Sand Trap is a fun and difficult physics maze game

Sand Trap
Sand Trap is one of those games that at first seem too hard to bother with, but when you try to stop playing it you discover you're hooked.

The goal is to get as much sand as you possibly can out of the maze and into the bucket at the bottom of the screen. You need to rotate your maze every which way to get the sand rolling around it. You then try to direct the sand to one of the exits of the maze, and hopefully into the bucket. It took me several tries to actually get sand into the bucket, but that might be due to the fact that I didn't even realize the bucket was there at first. Things improved significantly after that.

As you level up, the mazes get more complicated, with moving parts and other things making your life more difficult. Once you manage to get through all these obstacles and get enough sand into your bucket, you can move on.

As I mentioned, this is not an easy game, but it's highly addictive. The graphics remind me of some long lost game from the 80s, but this just proves that you don't need super graphics and crazy sound to make a game work. There's a soothing guitar track playing in the background and that's it, as far as I could hear, and you can enjoy it just as much with no sound at all.

If you like a fun physics challenge, don't miss out on this one!

Worx SD Power Screwdriver – I am the Law

One of the biggest pains with using drills and power screwdrivers is having to change bits all the time, however Worx has come up with a neat solution.  The Worx SD Power screwdriver is powered by a 4V Li-Ion battery and comes with a handy LED work light.  It’s big selling point is the six cylinder chamber that allows you to easily swap between different drill bits. It’s easy to quickly change bits by chambering the correct one via a revolving cylinder, and it comes with 2 rapid-reload cartridges to give you easy access to 12 different bits.

This is what Logan 3 or Joseph Dredd would  use if they weren’t “enforcers” and were instead DIY handymen. (Sorry folks, you’ll have to read the original book or comic to get this reference. :) )

Available for preorder from Amazon for $50.

Ease Into 5K Is a Powerful Running Coach in Your Pocket

Most of the fitness apps out there for iOS have three basic functions: They track your performance, integrate with your playlists to give you some music to listen to, and offer the ability to share what you've done on Facebook or Twitter. Ease Into 5K adds another layer to that formula: a ready-made training plan that builds from a relatively easy workout up to the target distance of 5 kilometers, or roughly 3 miles. While going through the workout, I found myself running a little faster than normal during the run intervals knowing that I will have a breather coming up shortly.

Tips And Tricks For Your iPad

Apple have designed the iPad to be easy to use, in fact even a two year old can use this device without any problems whatsoever. This makes it a very attractive option for people who are used to using an iPhone or for those who are not. However, there are still a few things about the device that do need a little bit of explaining.

Soft Reset Explained:

Although the iPad is pretty robust in so far as there are not actual moving parts in it, there are still a few things that can go wrong. With this in mind Apple have incorporated a ‘soft reset’ function into the device. This is particularly useful if the system ever freezes. By just holding the top or the power button at the same time as the Home button for a few seconds, allows users to reset the device.

Cut and Copy Pasting Explained:

Copying long texts on an iPad is a long and tiresome process. With this in mind Apple created an easy solution to the problem. Users can copy a whole paragraph without having to stretch the blue knobs on their screens. All they need to do is tap any of the text four times and this automatically highlights the whole paragraph. However, this only works on text that can be edited.

Importing Free eBooks Explained:

Users can benefit from free e-books on their iPads and this includes books that are no longer copyrighted.

Easy Mute Explained:

This is an easy to use function on an iPad that allows you to automatically turn off the volume on your device. Just by pressing the volume down button for a couple of seconds, users can turn off the volume on their devices.

Supersized Screenshots Explained:

Users can increase the size of a screenshot by simply holding the power and home buttons down simultaneously for half a second.

Bringing the Virtual Keyboard Back

Many people thought this would be difficult to achieve on their iPads but in fact it is easily done. All users have to do is touch the eject key on the real physical keyboard to get the virtual one back up.

Flickr adds to sharing options, now easier to share photos across the Web

flickr
It sure is nice to see some new developer action over at Flickr. The relatively slow-moving photo-sharing service has just announced a new sharing update, which consists of several new and easy ways to embed or link to your photos:
  • Share from Photo page: There's a new sharing option on each and every photo page. When logged off, the button shows only Facebook and Twitter options. But once you log on, you get Tumblr and Blogger too, and can configure other sharing venues as well.
  • Share non-public content on Facebook: This doesn't sound like a great idea, but you now can share private photos on Facebook if you're so inclined (and if you trust your privacy settings).
That's the gist of the update; it makes it easier to show off your pretty pictures in a plethora of places.

Sony begins to rollout ICS to Xperia U, Xperia Sola and Xperia Go

Xperia U

Sony recent announced it has begun to roll out Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) to three of their devices. The Xperia U, Xperia Sola and Xperia Go were all released with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) as they represent entry level devices in Sony's lineup. We saw an update a few weeks back for these devices and we wondered whether or not that would pave the way for ICS, and we're glad to see that it did.

Here are some of the new features you can expect with the update:

  • Lock screen with better functionality
  • Resizable widgets
  • Improved control of data consumption
  • New ways to experience your Sony content in WALKMAN, Album and Movies
  • The Xperia Sola will also be getting 'glove mode', which will add Sony's "floating touch" technology to make it work well while wearing gloves

Remember, if you are going to update, you'll need to ensure that your device is attached to a computer. The update is beginning to rollout today and it will continue over the next few weeks, so if you haven't seen it yet, hold tight.

Have you received your update yet? We'd love to hear from you in our Sony Xperia Forum.

Save your tabs and Panorama tab groups in Firefox 4

Firefox 4 save tabs
When Firefox 4's tab grouping tool, Panorama, had its keyboard shortcut changed to the finger-breaking combo of Ctrl+Shift+E, we thought Panorama would get dropped before FF4's final release -- but, thankfully, it made the cut!

If you've used Firefox 4 and Panorama, you might have noticed that Mozilla's new browser doesn't always save your tab groupings when you close the browser -- a bit of a pain, if you spend a long time setting up the perfect groups! This is tied into the removal of the 'Save and Quit' dialog box -- and enabling Panorama tab group saving is just a matter of re-enabling the Save and Quit dialog.

Open a new tab and head to about:config. Click through the warning and type 'quit' into the filter box. Double click browser.showQuitWarning to change its value to true (see image after the break). That's it -- now you'll have the option of saving your tabs, and thus tab groups, when you close Firefox.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 available day early from branded store in UK

Android Central

Samsung has announced that their new Galaxy Note 2 will be available a day early (this Sunday) from their officially-branded Samsung store in the U.K. This is good stuff for anyone that happens to leave close to the one in Westfield Stratford City, but no surprise seeing as Samsung did something similar for the Galaxy S 3. The UK Brand Store will also be hosting some competitions on launch day whereby participants have a shot at winning a free Galaxy Note 2. The rest of the UK will proceed to get access to the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 through various retail channels on October 1, while those of us in North America will have to wait until November to get our version.

We spent some time with the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 at IFA and walked away duly impressed. Anyone needing a refresher can take a look at the specs.

  • Network: 3G: HSPA+ 21Mbps (HSDPA 21Mbps / HSUPA 5.76Mbps); 4G LTE: 100Mbps/ 50Mbps
  • Processor: 1.6 GHz quad-core processor
  • Display: 5.5” HD Super AMOLED (1,280 x 720)
  • OS: Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean)
  • Camera: Main(Rear): 8 Megapixel Auto Focus Camera with LED Flash, BSI; Sub(Front): 1.9 Megapixel VT Camera, BSI; Best Photo, Best Faces, Low light shot
  • GPS: A-GPS; Glonass
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth® v 4.0 (Apt-X Codec support) LE; USB 2.0 Host; WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n (2.4 & 5 GHz), Wi-Fi HT40; Wi-Fi Direct; mHL; NFC
  • Memory: 16/32/64GB User memory + 2GB (RAM); microSD (up to 64GB)
  • Battery: Standard battery, Li-ion 3,100mAh

I'd be curious to see if any other official Samsung Brand Stores are offering the same promotion. Anyone near the one in the UK intending to check out the launch day festivities this weekend?

How Much IT Policy Is Too Much?

As almost everyone has probably already noticed by now, there are some radical changes going on in the way that organizations purchase, manage and use technology. Since IT is by its very nature adaptive, this is not totally unexpected. However, even though we expect technology to change, there are periods when it changes faster than others. And right now, changes are coming quickly: between virtualization and cloud, mobile and BYOD, VDI, large-volume storage and the slow uphill push to Exascale computing, IT is in a period of transition.
