Usher Breaks Silence on Justin Bieber, His Troubled Protege

Usher breaks his silence on Justin Bieber in a cover story interview for ‘Nylon Guys’ magazine. The mentor of the troubled teen pop sensation speaks out from the vantage point of one who himself began his music career at an early age and became the protege of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs.

The 35-year-old R&B music superstar and coach on NBC’s ‘The Voice’ offered his first extended public remarks about his protege, the now 20-year-old Justin Bieber whom he first signed and began to mentor when he was a 13-year-old YouTube video sensation.

Usher’s words come now in the aftermath of the teen idol’s legal entanglements — which include a DUI arrest in Miami — and the months of tabloid predominance which cumulatively have eclipsed what had been international notoriety and success.

He said, “I gave every bit of advice and always told him it was up to him if he really wanted this. Now that he has it, as an adult, it’s his to manage.”

As the magazine hits newsstands, Justin Bieber has seen the release of two videos in which he has uttered the N word and made racist jokes.

While not addressing those specific indicts, which have come after the interview was conducted, he gives his overall take on what has unfolded — indeed unraveled — in Justin Bieber’s life.

He said, “Do I turn my head in shame based off of what I see, what I know? Nah, I don’t because it’s all part of life’s process. Am I in it with him? Yeah.”

He went on to say, “It’s unfortunate. I hate some of the things I hear. Is it all true? I don’t know. But I will tell you this: Success comes with a price. Every person that has grown up, grows up with something. It ain’t just perfect from the beginning.”

Alluding to his own past as the protege of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, Usher said, “Artistic development made me who I am. Somebody took the time to help me find what it is that works for me as an entertainer and who I am as a music maker.”

The Nylon Guys Magazine cover photo and the photo spread can be seen here along with a few interview excerpts on other topics.

The controversy over Justin Bieber just coinciding with the publication of the magazine has served to overshadow the main topic which is Usher’s highly anticipated big screen portrayal of boxing legend Sugar Ray, a biopic which costars Robert De Niro and Edgar Ramirez.
