Zooey Deschanel graces the cover of ‘InStyle’ magazine and talks about double standards — specifically expectations that women must have children — and more in an illuminating and candid interview. The ‘New Girl’ star poses for an alluring photo spread.
The 34-year-old Zooey Deschanel has had a distinguished career both as an actress presently seen portraying Jessica Day in the Fox series ‘New Girl’ as well as and a recording artist as one half of the duo She & Him with M. Ward. And through it all she has never been one to follow convention or expectations
That is very much the focus of the August issue of InStyle cover story interview as the magazine insists on adding “fiery” as an adjective to “feminist.” It brings to mind that other adjective so often tacked on an activist stance, “militant.”
The publication’s editorializing aside, Zooey Deschanel speaks her mind on a number of subjects under the “feminist” category including the expectation that women have children. Speaking of the days when she was married to Death Cab for Cutie musician Ben Gibbard, she said “that was the first thing people wanted to know. “Like every woman is dying to give birth!” She added, “I don’t think so.”
She went on to say, “Nobody asks a guy that. And you go into a supermarket and every tabloid is like, ‘Pregnant and Alone!’ Stuck in this 1950s ideal of how a woman should live her life. That’s not something that defines me at all.”
She also speaks about her entrepreneurialism and work ethic and how it was shaped by her upbringing as the daughter of a cinematographer and an actress. She said, “I’ve seen a lot of people turn—sometimes it unlocks who they really are. They turn into celebrities who are separate from themselves. That’s OK, but I just don’t want to be like that,” she says. “I have to be normal. My mother wouldn’t let me be any other way.”
