Weird Al Yankovic’s ‘Lame Claim to Fame’ music video is just the latest from his ‘Mandatory Fun’ album to go viral and cut through the clutter of the very celebrity culture it so brilliantly mocks. From the longtime musical parodist who has brought us classics for decades, this is yet another.
With the seventh of eight videos from Weird Al Yankovic’s new album ‘Mandatory Fun,’ he continues to win the Internet. Without a single miss all of the videos have drawn notice and gone viral. He brought us Pharrell Williams’ ‘Happy’ reworked at ‘Tacky’ and he turned Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’ into ‘Word Crimes.’ And in original songs such as ‘Sports Song’ he has taken aim at some of the absurdity of our milieu.
He has done the same yet again with ‘Lame Claim to Fame,’ which was a long overdue mockery of what has become celebrity culture, where being famous for being famous doesn’t even begin to cover the absurdity of it all.
What does it take to parody something that’s already a parody of itself. Well, first of all a song done in the Southern Culture on the Skids style and a video shot in stop-motion and a lot of name dropping. “A lot” is an understatement. in fact part of the fun is picking up all of the name checks in this video. Just a sampling would include Kim Kardashian (of course) along with Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Jack Nicholson and quite a few more.
Equally entertaining are the jokes within the jokes in the lyrics, as in when Weird Al declares, “I know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who knows Kevin Bacon.” And there we have it, the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game which was a spoof on Six Degrees of Separation.
It’s a must see classic and you can watch the full ‘Lame Claim to Fame’ video below!
