We all think of Kristen Wiig as one of the funniest comediennes in Hollywood right now. Well, she is that, but that’s not ALL Kristen is. The actress opened up to ELLE in their August issue about the darker roles she’s taking on and why she decided to make those creative choices. RELATED: See Kristen Wiig in ‘Girls Most Likely.’
Kristen talked about why she decided to do some dramatic roles as well as why she’s branching out into directing.
It’s not necessarily a bad thing. You have to have some sort of context for a person to register in your brain, and I was introduced to the world as a cast member of SNL. But I’ve always wanted to do dramatic stuff, to write and direct, do a lot of different things. Comedy is where my heart lies, but there’s also something really satisfying about being able to step away with a small crew, become a character and get to know her for a few months at a time.”
In ‘The Skeleton Twins,’ Kristen’s performance is so emotionally revealing, ELLE referred to it as “the emotional equivalent of full-frontal nudity.” In the upcoming movie, ‘Welcome to Me,’ her character has borderline personality disorder who quits taking her meds after winning the lottery and starts a TV talk show. Kristen explained what motivated her to take the part.
I’d never read a character like that. I got to a scene where it read, ‘She’s fully naked,’ and I remember thinking: If I do this movie, I have to do this scene, because it’s really important to this script.”’
Goodness! It sounds like Kristen really committed to the role, doesn’t it? The setting for the ELLE photo shoot was Grey Gardens, the legendary East Hampton, New York, estate made iconic by the 1976 documentary of the same name, where socialites Edith and Edie Beale lived—and donned whimsical outfits daily—for 25 years, rarely leaving the grounds. It’s the first time the grounds have been used for a fashion shoot or for anything besides the documentary about the place. That must have provided an amazing atmosphere. You can read Kristen’s entire interview in the August issue of ELLE, which hits newsstands on July 22.
