Lupita Nyong’o won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in ’12 Years a Slave’ and gave a memorable and emotional speech. All evening she had been luminous, as always on the red carpet. See the pictures and watch her unforgettable speech at the 86th Academy Awards.
The 31-year-old Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o took home the Best Supporting Actress Oscar, and as she has every time on stage at an awards show — and she has had plenty of awards and plenty of practice! — she brought down the house with an inspiring, stirring, and tearful speech of gratitude.
It is her searing portrayal of the slave Patsey in the Steve McQueen-directed movie ’12 Years a Slave’ which has won her such a staggering number of well deserved awards.
As she made her way to the podium she was embraced first by her brother Peter Nyong’o Jr. (who appeared in Ellen DeGeneres’ star-studded selfie which broke a Twitter record for the most retweets) and then by Liza Minnelli.
At the podium she made a point to remember the life of the character whom she had portrayed, Patsey, a historical figure in Solomon Northrop’s autobiography of the same title on which ’12 Years a Slave’ is based.
She said, “It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s. And so I want to salute the spirit of Patsey for her guidance.”
And she paid tribute to the man himself, who had been that free black man in New York for his entire life until he was kidnapped and sold into slavery –”thank you for telling her story and your own.” She thanks the director, Steve McQueen, “You charge everything you fashion with a breath of your own spirit.”
As she became visibly moved and emotional, she said, “Thank you so much for putting me in this position. This has been the joy of my life. I’m certain that the dead are standing about you and watching and they are grateful and so am I.”
She went on to thank her costars including Chiwetel Ejiofor who portrayed the title character –”thank you for your fearlessness and how deeply you went into telling Solomon’s story.” She thanked others in the movie including Michael Fassbender, who had portrayed a slave owner. Not yet finished with her expression of gratitude she went on to name several who were behind-the-camera including the film’s editor.
Concluding, she said, “I want to thank my family for your training and the Yale School of Drama as well for your training. My friends, the Wilsons, this one’s for you. My brother, Junior, sitting by my side. Thank you so much. You are my best friend. And Ben, my other best friend, my chosen family.”
Her concluding words, as she was in tears, “When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from your dreams are valid..”
The beautiful speech was one of the high points of the night.
And Lupita Nyong’o did not disappoint on the red carpet. She wore a stunning ice blue custom Prada princess-style gown with a plunging neckline and a long train, topped off with a diamond headband.
