Lena Dunham speaks about love and relationships and her boyfriend, Jack Antonoff, body image, possibly leaving her acting career and more in a cover story interview for Glamour magazine. As always, the ‘Girls’ creator and star is never shy in expressing her viewpoint.
The 27-year-old Lena Dunham has had unconventional success as the creator, writer, director and star of an unconventional television show, ‘Girls’ on HBO which continues to be a lightning rod of conversation and controversy. And with that, there is much curiosity over the 27-year-old native New Yorker behind it.
Gracing the cover of Glamour magazine with her own brand of glamour as she is photographed from a side angle, revealing to the camera and to the world the tattoos on her right arm. Likewise the an appropriate cover story headline “Why She’s Over Talking about Her Body.” And while everyone else might want to talk about her body and her nudity on the TV show, Dunham has plenty to say on plenty of other topics.
On love and relationships, she expounded on how the words of the late legendary playwright and screenwriter Nora Ephron had helped her. “You can’t meet someone until you’ve become who you’re becoming.” She said that before her present relationship with Jack Antoff of the band fun, “I was all tortured about whether I should get back together with this guy I’d been seeing for five months. We’d broken up, and it felt like my only chance at romance for the rest of my life. But Nora was like, “No, no, no.”
She went on to note all that had happened when she heeded the advice and broke up with him. “Girls debuted at the beginning of April, and then I met Jack at the end of April. The dialogue around the show already existed, so it was sort of clear to him what the baggage of dating me was going to be. I remember talking with him on our first date and him being like, “God, all the articles about your nudity on the show are such bullsh-t.” It’s funny, ’cause in some ways that’s the conversation we still have when I’m upset [about stuff I read]. ”
As for her hit series and whether is is pure autobiography, she said, “That’s something I’ve come up against—people [thinking], If HBO had just asked me, I would have made a TV show that was just as good but included more people or was smarter or funnier. Like, Hey, just give me half an hour and a million dollars, and I’ll do this.”
She went on to elaborate about her artistic vision for the show, saying, “I want you to feel like you are getting lost with these characters. So I write long scenes. TV feels the least like life when it’s like two seconds here, then “meanwhile at this person’s house.”” As for the controversial nudity, she said, “‘I think I radicalized my relationship to my own body in order to accept it. To make my body a prop in my work gave it a value I didn’t feel it had before.”
She went on to address body image, including her weight, revealing she is comfortable with her size and her appearance on the red carpet. She said, “At the Golden Globes I had a little bit of fat bubbling over, but I love how that looks. It looks so bountiful. It reminded me of corset dramas.”
As for her future acting career, she made a surprising comment: ““I don’t know if I’m going to want to act anymore. I’m always relieved on the days I don’t have to. I’d rather give parts to other women than be the woman having the parts.”
She also weighed in on the Woody Allen controversy now that the allegations of the sexual abuse of his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow have resurfaced thanks to her searing and powerful letter published in the New York Times, ” find the most recent revelations about his life really challenging,’ She went on to say, “I’m grateful to Dylan Farrow for her bravery in speaking out.” And she had strong words for Woody Allen’s response letter which was also published in the New York times, “I’m disapointed that Woody Allen thought discussing his ex’s sexual history and shaming her was an effective strategy in arguing his innocence. “I think I want my heroes to embody values I can agree with in their work and life.”
