Ellie Goulding has debuted her music video for ‘Beating Heart’ a song from the movie ‘Divergent.’ The evocative song and visuals had a formal world premiere on MTV to much excitement from fans as the ballad beautifully captures the desolation and the struggle of the characters.
Ellie Goulding and the movie’s costars Shailene Woodley and Theo James were on hand at MTV for the debut of the music video. As with the trailers, the still photos and the posters, once again viewers are taken into an unfamiliar world where teens face alienation and literally fight for their lives in the dystopian Chicago setting.
If it sounds like ‘Hunger Games’ that’s why Hollywood has banked so much on this movie which, like that blockbuster franchise, is also based on a bestselling young adult novel. ‘Divergent’ is the screen adaptation of a novel of the same title by author Veronica Roth and the first of a trilogy. And for British pop star Ellie Goulding, contributing the theme song to a movie with such surefire international box office success is quite a coup.
In the video Ellie Goulding is luminous, clad in a spaghetti-strap black garment, sporting tattoos much like those of the movie characters. She is seen taking a strange liquid in the opening moments and later rushing through a menacing and gloomy forest, misty with fog. The camera intercuts to scenes of her dark-haired male love interest, who is similarly alone in the forest. As such, it evokes the mournfulness of the song lyrics: “And I don’t know where I’m going / But I know it’s gonna be a long time / And I’ll be leaving in the morning / Come the white wine bitter sunlight.”
While the imagery on its surface may seem cliched, it’s the tension of the setting, the back story, the anxiety of loss that is so beautifully conveyed in the video, and that’s the essence of the story of divergent, of Shailene Woodley’s character, the teenager Tris Prior who finds herself an outsider as she does not fit in her society’s factions which are defined by personality traits.
The song is but one in a full movie soundtrack which of itself has generated a buzz. It features contributions from several music artists: M83, Snow Patrol, Chance the Rapper, Kendrick Lamar, Tame Impala, ASAP Rocky, Pia Mia among others including Zedd and his collaborating artists, Matthew Koma and Miriam Bryant, who are heard on the lead single, ‘Find You.’
Ellie Goulding’s ‘Beating Heart’ is the album’s second single but the first with an official music video which, now that it has had its world premiere, you can see in its entirety below.
