Miley Cyrus Is a Documentary and She Has an Army

Miley Cyrus has a documentary. She has plenty to say. Are we listening? What will she tell us in “Miley: The Movement?” Are we willing to concede yet, that the 20-year-old ‘Wrecking Ball’ singer is a movement? Or that she has an “army?”

Three weeks later, we are still talking about her. How prophetic was her song, “We Can’t Stop?” What did she know about us that we didn’t yet know?

We wait daily for the next celebrity to weigh in on the issue of the day. And no, it’s not Syria, it’s not the debt ceiling. It’s not even the suddenly surging stock market. It’s Miley Cyrus’s notorious twerking performance at the MTV VMAs.

Given that there is no distinction these days between notoriety and fame, then this is brilliant marketing by whomever has masterminded this prelude to the release of her Bangerz album on October 8. Oh, and she is topless on one of the alternative covers of the album. Did we expect any less? Perhaps the sudden end of her engagement to Liam Hemsworh, ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ actor — and their mutual unfollowing on Twitter — is also part of the marketing?

So the icon Cher weighs in on Miley’s performance, as does Britney Spears, as does Justin Timberlake. Search Twitter and there are millions of reactions. Everyone has an opinion.

Yes, even Miley. She also has something to say. Appropriately from the safe harbor of an hour-long documentary on MTV. Yes, the same MTV channel that broadcast her performance that we haven’t stopped talking about. It will premiere on Wednesday, October 2nd. There’s a trailer we can watch since of course we can’t wait till October 2.

Miley has this to say: “I was born to become who I am right now. Right now I’m at a point in my career when I can be exactly what I want to be, who I want to be…I have this freedom to do whatever I want because I’m starting as a new artist now.”

As for the army? Those are her “fans.” As for all the attention? She says, “You’re always going to make people talk. You might as well make them talk for two weeks rather than two seconds.”

“Miley: The Movement,” the trailer is below. Rest assured, there is no twerking.
