Philip Seymour Hoffman: Last Interviews (Video)

The death of Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman at age 46 has stunned the entertainment world. As many seek to pay tribute or to learn more about his final days, there is a renewed interest in his last interviews. You can watch them here and hear what the celebrated actor had to say in what have become his parting words.

It was on February 2, coincidentally Super Bowl Sunday, that sad news emerged from New York City that Philip Seymour Hoffman had been found dead in his Greenwich Village apartment of a suspected drug overdose. The sudden news was crushing and tragic with many of his acting peers, celebrities and others in the entertainment industry, as well as the fans at large mourning the loss of one of this generations most brilliant and accomplished actors.

Philip Seymour Hoffman was an actor’s actor which is arguably the highest compliment anyone can pay a thespian who was so passionate and devoted to the craft. But he did not have to settle for compliments, as he received not only the Best Actor Oscar Award for his stellar performance as Truman Capote in the 2005 biopic ‘Capote’ — but along the way, BAFTA, SAG and Golden Globe Awards along with many award nominations — three other Oscar nods as well as Tony Awards, Golden Globes, etc.

What is especially tragic about his death is that Hoffman was an actor and a performing artist in his prime, active and engaged in numerous projects, among them the two films that were premiering at Sundance Film Festival. And it was in Park City, Utah for that festival that he made his last public appearances on the red carpet and gave his final interviews. For this reason it’s difficult to say exactly which interview was the absolute last interview, but he did speak with a variety of media outlets during the festival.

Notably, he spoke with Variety (first video below) about one of these two movies, ‘God’s Pocket,’ a black comedy in which he portrayed Mickey Scarpato, a man trying to cover up the accidental death of his stepson. He was joined in the interview by his costars, John Slattery and Christina Hendricks, both of ‘Mad Men’ fame. Among other issues, he spoke about the dynamics of the relationship between his character and his character’s wife, portrayed by Hendricks. He said, “It’s a very intimate movie where you have to be vulnerable with each other.”

In a separate interview on that same movie (second video below) he spoke about the character he portrayed and what resonated with him, noting that the character was his age and “dealing with issues you have to do at middle age.” He added, “You realize that some choices you made along the way you have to shift or change, or else you just stay in the dark.” He also spoke with Vanity Fair, alongside Christina Hendricks (third video below).

In another interview, via the L.A. Times, he spoke about the other movie, “A Most Wanted Man” — a screen adaptation of a John le Carré novel directed by Anton Corbijn — which had its premiere at Sundance. In this one he had perfected a German accent in order to portray a chain-smoking German intelligence officer named Gunter Bachmann with a worse-for-the-wear look about him. The video of the interview can be seen here.

As noted, video of the other Philip Seymour Hoffman interviews are below.
