‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’ Last Show Video: Final Monologue, The Muppets and More

Jimmy Fallon made a final appearance as the host of ‘Late Night’ with a little help from The Muppets, guest Andy Samberg and a few celebrities. A farewell, yes, but within days he becomes the host of ‘The Tonight Show.’

Yes, quite the transition, as Jimmy Fallon brings the iconic ‘The Tonight Show’ back to New York City for the first time in decades. And in so doing, he leaves ‘Late Night’ to incoming host Seth Meyers of ‘Saturday Night Live’s’ ‘Weekend Update’ fame.

Fallon himself is a SNL alum who took over ‘Late Night’ in 2010 from Conan O’Brien who became host of ‘The Tonight Show’ for a very brief few months before, as we all remember, Jay Leno became host again, in the midst of the controversial circumstances that some dubbed the late night TV wars, with Jimmy Kimmel famously spoofing the wars with a Ken Burns style documentary. Well, certainly one hopes that Jimmy Fallon’s tenure at ‘The Tonight Show’ will have a longer shelf life!

He began the program with his final monologue and in so opening the show, he bid his farewells rather than waiting until the end. He began with humor, saying, “I’m really going to miss being on TV at 12:37,” and noting his competitors were Craig Ferguson (of CBS’ ‘Late Late Show’) and “a veggie chopper infomercial.” He said it was 969th and final episode of ‘Late Night’ “or as my dad put it, ‘Couldn’t make it to 1,000? Quitter!’”

“We’ve done over 10,000 monologue jokes over the last five years,” he said, and proceeded to summarize them, saying, “Joe Biden needed Obamacare after Anthony Weiner texted Justin Bieber a picture of Chris Christie dating a Kardashian on the Jersey shore with Rob Ford.”

Along the way, in saying goodbye to the show that had been his home for five years, he thanked the crew and also paid tribute to its first host David Letterman as well as to Conan O’Brien.

For the television viewers, he had quite the surprise final moments — and guests — yet in store. He and ‘The Muppets’ performed ‘The Weight’ a song by The Band featured in the movie ‘The Last Waltz.’ Fallon was seen on the drums and surrounded by Kermit and Miss Piggy and the rest of the iconic characters of Sesame Street fame.

And wonderfully when the song concluded, Jimmy Fallon rose from the drum set and headed down the hallway. He opened the door to Studio 6B emblazoned with ‘The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.’ Thus his farewell became both a transition and a celebration as The Roots and the crew were waiting for him.
