Lady Gaga and R. Kelly evoked a Presidential scandal in their performance of the duet ‘Do What U Want’ at the American Music Awards. The elaborate staging saw the duo romancing each other in the Oval Office.
The song, ‘Do What U Want’ is Lady Gaga’s first-ever collaboration with the R&B icon R. Kelly and is the second official single from her latest album, ‘ARTPOP.’ During her recent Saturday Night Live stint as host and musical guest she and R. Kelly had put on a theatrical performance of the song with some eyebrow raising simulated sex on the stage.
This time, the duo went for a full-scale Broadway style production complete with stage sets and numerous backup dancers. R. Kelly was President Robert Kelly, a fictitious character, with Lady Gaga portraying a character evoking Marilyn Monroe of the iconic JFK “Happy Birthday Mr. President.” The Oval Office antics draw reference not just to the current plotline of ABC’s ‘The Scandal’ which sees Kerry Washington’s Olivia Pope having an affair with the fictional President Fitz, but also, harking back a few years to President Bill Clinton and White House intern Monica Lewinsky.
The “President” beckons his willing “secretary” to the Oval Office, as she breaks into song, attired in a sexy silver costume alongside backup dancers both male and female in a full-blown Broadway musical showstopping number.
But the fleeting glee of dancing and making out atop the desk is soon over, when President Kelly holds up his mobile phone saying, “Who put these pictures on Instagram?” He is next dogged by a reporter to whom he says, “I’ve never seen this girl before in my life. I just need to get back to my job, serving my country.”
Lady Gaga is on her knees in agony over the denouncement. She sings the lyrics, “Do what you want with my body….” while atop a grand piano, with crowd-pleasing R&B-style embellishment. An image of a young pianist is projected behind her, perhaps an actual image of herself as a child. Finally, newspaper headlines and stories flash on the screen, reflecting the real-life tabloid headlines she herself has been subjected to — “Lady Gaga is fat” — and so on.
With so many pop culture and historical checkpoints, it’s generated much discussion and reaction. Lady Gaga herself set the tone by arriving at the red carpet on a white “horse,” a two-person reenacted horse, that is. She was quoted as saying that she drew inspiration from Bianca Jagger arriving at the iconic Studio 54 in New York City on a white horse.
