Watch the first official trailer of the West Memphis Three crime drama ‘Devil’s Knot’ starring Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth. The biographical movie is based on the case of the three teenagers wrongfully convicted and sent to prison for 18 years for the murder of three young boys in Arkansas.
The movie was directed by Oscar-nominated Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan (‘The Sweet Hereafter,’ ‘Chloe’) and is based the book of the same title by journalist Mara Leveritt regarding the trials of Jessie Misskelley, Damien Echols and Jason Baldwin who were convicted for the gruesome 1993 murder of three eight-year-old Boy Scouts. They were dubbed the West Memphis Three (WM3), after the name of the small, tight-knit and religiously oriented Arkansas town where the murders took place. It was believed, falsely, that they were involved in satanism and satanic ritual practices.
Reese Witherspoon portrays Pamela Hobbs, the mother of one of the victims, Stevie Branch. Colin Firth portrays Ron Lax, an investigator who is skeptical about the case against the three accused teens. The trailer gives a glimpse of a forceful yet distraught Reese Witherspoon with a Deep South accent, desperate as her son goes missing. We see the tension that builds as the children are the focus of a massive manhunt in the woods with a heartbreaking discovery. The trailer also showcases some scenes that chronicle the arrest and conviction of the West Memphis Three.
The real life case received international attention and was the subject of four documentaries — the films that comprise the HBO “Paradise Lost” trilogy as well as Amy Berg’s ‘West of Memphis’ — and several books. The West Memphis Three also gained support among some of Hollywood’s elite including Johnny Depp. They were eventually released from prison in 2011 after serving 18 years, through an agreement reached with prosecutors and Alford pleas, in lieu of a full exoneration.
‘Devil’s Knot,’ however, is the first non-documentary feature film adaptation of the story. In addition to the two Oscar-winning lead performers, the movie boasts an impressive supporting cast including Kevin Durand, Stephen Moyer, Elias Koteas and Bruce Greenwood among others. The movie had its world premiere at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival where it received mixed reviews. However, the fascination with the case along with the stellar cast and notable director continue to draw interest and attention.
