It’s official! Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert, who currently hosts his namesake show The Colbert Report, will be headed to CBS to take over the Late Show when David Letterman retires next year.
CBS’s Leslie Moonves, the president and chief operating officer of CBS, and Nina Tassler, the chairwoman of CBS’s entertainment division confirmed the news this morning in an announcement.
Colbert addressed the announcement with a statement of his own saying,
Simply being a guest on David Letterman’s show has been a highlight of my career. I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave’s lead. I’m thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth.
Congratulations to Stephen Colbert (and my sympathies to Craig Ferguson, who hosts The Late, Late Show and who I thought would be a shoo-in for the job!).
