The first official trailer for ‘The Maze Runner’ had had its debut online. The science fiction dystopian thriller is based on a young adult novel of the same title and was directed by Wes Ball, and stars Dylan O’Brien (‘Teen Wolf’).
‘The Maze Runner’ fits the new mold of Hollywood blockbusters and would-be blockbusters that began as bestselling YA novel trilogies. We have witnessed the runaway the success of ‘The Hunger Games’ in two installments and we await the verdict on the first installment of ‘Divergent.’ Are we at all surprised that ‘The Maze Runner’ is also a bestselling trilogy of young adult novels? All were written by James Dashner with the second and third novels entitled The Scorch Trials and The Death Cure.
Now the first is about to hit the big screen with ‘Teen Wolf’ star Dylan O’Brien in the lead role. He portrays a teenager, ‘Thomas,’ who finds himself among a group of fellow teenage boys in a place known simply as The Glade, a stone walled maze that is seemingly inescapable. Like him none of them has any memory of life before their confinement. But he knows his name even as he tries to grasp elusive recollections of the past which he struggles to make use of. The mystery deepens when suddenly a girl, Teresa, portrayed by Kaya Scodelario, arrives.
Yes, these are familiar themes we have seen in other movies and other novels; a dystopian future, teenagers at odds in society, where feelings of alienation are compounded and there is a literal struggle for physical survival.
A winning formula? Perhaps so, if the characters and the unfolding drama are given literal room to breathe. We need real identifiable characters, after all, not just a premise. From the looks of the trailer, we have another world suitably recreated. Massive walls that evoke both the past — think of the spectacular surviving arenas of ancient Rome and Greece — and yet a futuristic edge, like a prison planet. As a first glimpse, it is intriguing.
We also have a cast of mostly unknowns which, of course should the movie prove successful will launch careers. Among those who might some day become household names Will Poulter, Aml Ameen, Ki Hong Lee, and Blake Cooper among others. Veteran actress Patricia Clarkson is also among the extensive cast.
‘The Maze Runner’ opens in theaters on September 19th. The trailer video is below!
