Idina Menzel on ‘Let It Go,’ ‘Frozen,’ John Travolta and More in Billboard Cover Story Interview

Idina Menzel has risen to international fame with the song ‘Let It Go’ from the Disney movie ‘Frozen, and she is on the cover of Billboard magazine, and has much to say in the interview, including what she thinks about John Travolta mispronouncing her name at the Oscars.

The cover story perfectly captures her journey to worldwide fame, ‘The (Not So New) It Girl’ noting that it has taken the 42-year-old actress and singer 18 years to have a Billboard Top 10 hit with an Oscar-winning song no less. This after years on the Broadway stage, the release of a few solo albums, a recurring role on ‘Glee’ as Shelby Corcoran, the biological mother of Lea Michele’s character, Rachel Berry, and even singing at the White House as part of the ‘In Performance at the White House Series.’

But now it has happened! She now become a household name ironically because she was introduced to an international audience at the Oscars by John Travolta who infamously mispronounced her name as Adele Dazeem and, as we know this has led to an Internet meme of now epic proportions as the actor has been mocked mercilessly.

John Travolta has since made a public apology in a statement: “I’ve been beating myself up all day. Then I thought … what would Idina Menzel say? She’d say, ‘Let it go, let it go!’”

And now Idina Menzel herself speaks out. She told Billboard that he had sent her flowers and a note. Of hearing herself introduced as Adele Dazeem at the Oscars she said, “That threw me for a minute, but then I just got back on track and reminded myself of where I was.” She went on to say, “He was really gracious and sent this gorgeous email, and we’re buddies and it’s all cool.” She reiterated: “Please. I mean, I’ve only benefited from it.”

As for ‘Let It Go,’ the hit song, the Billboard article notes that it took an unorthodox route to reach the Top 10 — namely that sales rather than radio play initially brought about its rise in the chard — of which Menzel said, “I’m just excited to see it break some rules.”

The actress and singer herself continues to forge ahead with her Broadway career even as she find pop music stardom as she will be appearing in a new Broadway show, “If/Then” which a decidedly adult theme — even a song whose subject matter is as explicit as its title “What the F—” — quite far removed from the ‘Let It Go’ song of the Disney blockbuster.

All in all, an inspiring story of a performing artist’s perseverance and dedication to her craft, and now some commercial success to boot.
