Stephen Colbert is taking over as host of ‘The Late Show’ after David Letterman retires next year. CBS made the announcement that Comedy Central’s ‘The Colbert Report’ host makes a transition from cable to broadcast television and inherits the program created by the retiring TV icon.
The retiring 66-year-old David Letterman made a surprise announcement of his retirement during the usual taping of his show at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City, and sparked rampant speculation as to who his replacement might be.
But we need not speculation any longer. Variety broke the story that the 49-year-old Stephen Colbert is the successor. CBS released an official written statement from its chief executive, Leslie Moonves: “Stephen Colbert is one of the most inventive and respected forces on television. David Letterman’s legacy and accomplishments are an incredible source of pride for all of us here, and today’s announcement speaks to our commitment of upholding what he established for CBS in late night.”
For his part, Letterman also released a statement, “Stephen has always been a real friend to me. I’m very excited for him, and I’m flattered that CBS chose him. I also happen to know they wanted another guy with glasses.”
Colbert also weighed in, ““Simply being a guest on David Letterman’s show has been a highlight of my career. I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave’s lead. I’m thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth.”
With Stephen Colbert as host, we will see the man rather than the satirically — and often hysterically — faux conservative — persona who was the eponymous host of ‘The Colbert Report.’ This along sparks plenty of reaction and speculation. Variety quotes a CBS representative who confirms that he will not play “that character.”
This alone sparks much curiosity, as reactions roll in, and the Twitterverse has its chance to weigh in, as do celebrities and the public at large. It does, of course, mean the end of ‘The Colbert Report,’ and with it, the persona known as ‘Stephen Colbert’ of the show who even testified before Congress, attempted to run for President and authored books, and went on book tours as that ‘author.’ Yes, the end of an era and the beginning of a new one.
CBS has not released details yet as to when Colbert takes over or of the particulars of the new iteration of ‘The Late Show.’ Thus leaving room — for now — for more speculation!
