Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera performed ‘Do What U Want’ live on the season finale of ‘The Voice.’ It marked the first-ever duet performance of the superstar divas. It was a triumph of vocal prowess and 1980s big hair and shoulder pads!
It was, to say the least, a notable performance. Lady Gaga originally collaborated on the single — from her new ARTPOP album — with R&B superstar R. Kelly and as the original duo they have already delivered some eyebrow raising performances. First there was the simulated sex on Saturday night Live. And then there was the elaborate Oval Office ‘Scandal’ meets JFK meets Marilyn Monroe.
So what happens when two divas take on ‘Do What U Want? And what if they happen to both wear long silver metallic dresses that seemed to have come straight from the set of the iconic 1980s ‘Dynasty?’ And what if it’s dificult to tell who had the bigger platinum blond hairstyle?
Well, yes, that’s just how it was. Lady Gaga began the song alone on the stage and suddenly there was the unmistakable voice of Christina Aguilera singing the R. Kelly lyrics. The two singers began to circle each other and draw closer and hold hands. And yes, there was a a bit of staging, too, as Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera sat together, still holding hands and sharing a glass of champagne.
They were met with waves of applause. And we do recall ‘Applause’ as the lead single of Lady Gaga’s new album, and its opening line, ‘I live for the applause, applause, applause.’ And it was well deserved. A powerhouse performance and yet, not a hint of controversy. Truthfully, real talent never needs controversy. (Cross reference Beyonce’s surprise album, which has now officially debuted at no. 1 on the Billboard 200, her fifth such no. 1 debut.)
Amazingly it was their first time meeting, not just collaborating. It’s so easy to assume every music artist knows every other major music artist, but such is not the case. Christiana Aguilera heaped praise upon her new duet partner, and most likely new friend as well.
She said, “This is the first time we’ve ever met. I just have to say guys, she’s like the most down to earth, real person that I’ve ever met in this business and female to female, in this industry it’s really hard to find that kind of a person.”
Later she Tweeted: “She is such a powerhouse vocalist and I was honored to join the stage with @ladygaga tonight on #TheVoice! xo”
The warmth and mutual admiration was very much in evidence on stage. It marks the second time in very recent memory that Christina Aguilera has enhanced a song; just witness her recent collaboration with pop duo A Great Big World on their song ‘Say Something.’
The ‘Do What U Want’ duet was one of the highlights of a two-hour finale of many performances — Celine Dion, Ne-Yo, OneRepublic, Paramore, and Aloe Blacc — and finally, the crowing of the season 5 winner, Tessanne Chin. Christina Aguilera’s contestant, Jacquie Lee, was the runner up, with the Team Adam Levine contender, Will Champlin as the third place finisher.
