Jimmy Fallon returned once again as SNL host, this time bringing with him three of his musical idols as surprise guests to celebrate Christmas. But two of his guests are a no show. Oh, the indignity!
The host of the eponymous ‘Late night with Jimmy Fallon’ took to the familiar stage of Studio 8H on the Christmas episode of Saturday Night Live,’ the show that launched his career. Surrounded by the copious holiday decorations, he acknowledged the applause and said he had a lot to be thankful for. He had a baby girl, and he would soon be taking over as host of ‘The Tonight Show’ as current host Jay Leno was departing.
He said he had asked three of three of his musical idols to perform with him live on show. And indeed, there were four microphones were set up on the stage for his three friends who would join him. David Bowie, Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney. It had the makings for quite the Christmas quartet and a soon to be viral video.
But David Bowie a no show? And Bob Dylan likewise? Traffic, Fallon says, they were all stuck in the Lincoln Tunnel. He said, “I’m a professional, I know the show must go on.”
And go on it does, as Fallon with guitar, does what a comedian must do. He sang ‘Joy to the World,’ doing a credible impression of all of his musical idols, as he switched from one microphone — and voice — to another.
Until suddenly, he bumps into Paul McCartney as he is imitating his stage banter. I thought you were stuck in traffic,” Fallon says.
McCartney replies, “I was but then I took a Citi Bike.” Although the joke may be lost on the rest of the world, New Yorkers, are all too familiar with the bike sharing program and the bike routes. He adds, “Am I too late to sing a song?”
Well, of course, it is never too late for a music legend to show up. They agreed on singing ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.’ The show goes on in grand and jazzy style.
And quite a show it is, with Justin Timberlake as musical guest as well as Jimmy Fallon’s frequent partner in comedy sketches as in their cold open, a Christmas-themed ‘Bringing it Down to WrappinVille.’ See that replay video along with the monologue video below!
