Britney Spears’ has a new television documentary, ‘I Am Britney Jean,’ chronicling her preparations for her Las Vegas residency at Planet Hollywood. It premieres on E! the same week as her new shows.
The holiday season this year has ushered in a new Britney Spears album, ‘Britney Jean,’ and soon a complete departure for the pop music superstar, a two-year headlining residency at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas which begins two days after Christmas, December 27th. The moment in history is now not without its documentary which will be broadcast on December 22nd.
After traveling the world, the 32-year-old takes the route other established artists have taken. The days of the “lounge singer” stigma of Vegas are long over. After the likes of Celine Dion and Garth Brooks, the Vegas strip welcomes another in the midst.
Britney Spears’ herself roused interest and excitement, when she Tweeted: “Have a little surprise coming for you all in a bit…any guesses as to what it is?! #BritneySurprise”
For hours #BritneySurprise was a trending topic as music fans wondered on that Friday the 13th of December could there be yet another surprise? Haplessly, Britney was competing with Beyonce who had all of the online world absolutely astonished and aghast with a surprise that added new dimension to a word that in the era of manufactured events and promotions has all but lost meaning.
Britney Spears’ surprise is the television documentary, “I Am Britney Jean.” She shared the first preview teaser clip, which you can see below. She reveals the pressures she feels even as the camera intercuts scenes of energetic — indeed virtually acrobatic — dance rehearsals. At one point in the clip, she even expresses some anxiety over what possibly could have been a serious neck injury.
She is drawing us closer and closer into the world of the performing artist who now, with the eyes of the world on her, must perform, and must excel, night after night. The brief clip does put one in the mind of nervousness and anxiety, the kind that thankfully has a larger and gratifying end.
But above and beyond the constraints of documentary narrative, no doubt, the pop superstar feels the pressure to hold onto her reign. Whether because of or in spite of lack of promotion — save for a couple of TV interviews and a couple of magazine cover interviews with the usual teasing confessionals of relationship problems and triumphs and quasi-confessions of plastic surgery — the new album, ‘Britney Jean’ debuted at no. 4 on the Billboard, marking it her worse debut week ever for an album, including her debut album.
