The theatrical trailer for Jonathan Glazer’s ‘Under the Skin’ has made its debut online. The science fiction thriller stars Scarlett Johansson as an alluring alien who is a deadly sexual predator seeking out male humans.
The highly anticipated thriller was co-written (with Walter Campbell) and directed by Jonathan Glazer, who made a memorable directorial debut with the crime drama, ‘Sexy Beast,’ released in 2000, followed by ‘Birth,’ a few years later. ‘Under the Skin’ is a screen adaptation of a novel of the same title by Michel Faber.
With the obvious box office lure of actress Scarlett Johansson — Esquire magazine’s Sexiest Woman Alive — has generated some of the buzz, the story itself is quite unnerving, playing upon some of our deepest fears as it chronicles the arrival of the alien in Scotland as she begins to infiltrate society, in search of men. It is all rather insidious as we are used to alien invaders arriving on ships perhaps with weapons and firepower and, while we may not be able to defeat them, at least we know who they are.
The trailer reveals a brunette Scarlett Johansson who is deep in the role with a Scottish accent, as she goes about a slow and methodical seduction of a man. She is variously seen wearing a brown fur coat and black lingerie, depending on the scene. Eerie, siren-like music is heard in the background and the victim meets an unpleasant fate.
‘Under the Skin’ had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival where it opened to critical acclaim and was later shown at the Venice and Toronto film festivals. It’s drawn favorable comparison to such iconic science fiction movies of the past as ‘The Man Who Fell to Earth’ and Stanley Kubrick’s ‘A Clockwork Orange.’
‘Under the Skin’ opens in UK theaters on March 14th. It opens in New York and L.A. on April 4th, and in select theaters on April 11th. The trailer video is below!
