Seth Meyers made his final appearance as anchor of Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update as he soon takes over ‘Late Night’ from departing host Jimmy Fallon. On hand to bid a memorable farewell were SNL alum Amy Poehler, Bill Hader (as Stefon), Andy Samberg, and Fred Armisen.
The long goodbye took place on the episode on the eve of the Super Bowl with Melissa McCarthy, who returned as host for the third consecutive year. As the show clipped along, and the hour grew later and later, we knew we would soon see that farewell. While obviously Seth Meyers’ career is on an ascendancy and will soon be on NBC five nights a week as the titular host of ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers’ there’s no doubt his departure will have a notable effect on the show that brought him fame.
The 40-yaer-old actor and comedian has been with Saturday Night Live since 2001 variously as co-head writer and head writer of the show and for the past several years, with a constant onscreen presence as the solo anchor of Weekend Update, after the departure of his co-anchor Amy Poehler. It was only recently that he has had a co-anchor, Cecily Strong.
With that in mind, he needed a proper sendoff. He was joined first by his former co-anchor Amy Poehler alongside Bill Hader in his Stefon character whom Meyers “married” last year as part of Hader’s sendoff. Their mission, as Poehler said, “We’re here to the other side.” Hader added, ‘We’re like a gateway drug.”
It was a farewell with heartfelt words and jokes interspersed.
Amy Poehler told him, “We are so proud of you. You’ve been the heart of this show for over a decade.”
Hader said, “You’re like the Sting of SNL…because it takes you 12 years to finish.”
Andy Samberg walked on set and sang the title lyrics from the iconic Boyz II Men song ‘It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday”.’
Seth Meyers, emotional now in his final words on the show said, “I just want to say being out here with my co-anchors and my dear friend and my husband is the perfect way to end. This is the job I’ve always wanted. I’ve had the best time and I’ve met the best people,” and went on to thank the crew, the writers, the executive producer Loren Michaels.
And, finally, Fred Armisen reprises his role as former New York Governor David Paterson as the scene faded out.
With Seth Meyers’ departure, the current SNL head writer Colin Jost takes over as co-anchor alongside Cecily Strong. And within just a few weeks, ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers’ hits the airwaves, with Amy Poehler among the first guests.
