Marketplace For Customized Goods CustomMade Raises $4M From Google Ventures And Others

CustomMade , an online marketplace that connects shoppers with artisans to make customized goods, has raised $4 million in funding co-led by Google Ventures and Schooner Capital. Existing investors Launch Capital, Nextview Ventures, Andrew McCollum and First Round Capital all participated in the round. This brings CustomMade's total funding to $8 million. CustomMade allows customers who want to make custom products like jewelry and furniture post project proposals. The startup has built a community of makers that can browse through customer project requests and assign themselves to ones they are suited to. Makers can sign up for and build profiles on the site, which allows customers to browse through their portfolios.

Verizon announces new prepaid wireless plans

Starting tomorrow (May 1), Verizon will begin offering up a new prepaid wireless plan, with unlimited talk and text plus 1GB of data for $80 monthly. You'll have to buy a new phone of course, and for now the only phone being offered is the less-than-stellar Samsung Illusion. You will be able to grab one in stores or online for $170, and it should be coming soon to Target, Best Buy, Radio Shack and WalMart. 

If you're looking for something with a bit more oompf, the prepaid Verizon Jetpack LTE hotspot could be what you're needing. Pricing starts at 250MB for $15 per week, 3GB for $60 per month or 10GB for $90 per month. The Jetpack itself will be available for $129.99 at Verizon stores and online, and it's also coming soon to Best Buy, Radio Shack and WalMart.

Kiip Extends Developer Fund Deadline, Sweetens Pot With Services And Advisors

For game developers who thought about applying for the $100,000 Build Fund from rewards network Kiip but didn't get around to it yet — good news! The deadline has been extended from today until May 30. And for those of you who weren't planning to apply, well, the company is adding some features to the fund that may entice you. The goal is to encourage the creation of games that incorporate Kiip's reward programs in their initial designs (rather than adding them later). Twenty developers are supposed to receive $5,000 in cash (adding up to $100,000 in all) — it's not a huge amount of funding, but CEO Brian Wong says it could make a real difference to an independent developer.

How Secure is My Password lets you know just that

We've all heard it before; you need to select a lengthy password, one that's hard to guess. Not a dictionary word. And it has to have some capital letters in it too, and some digits, and a symbol or two won't hurt either.

That's a handy set of rules to keep in mind, but How Secure is My Password helps us understand why they're important.

It's basically like a full-screen version of one of those password-strength meters websites sometimes use. But instead of showing you a bar going from "weak" to "strong", it shows you an estimation of how long your password would take to crack. That's a much more visceral way to understand why your password is strong.

For example, when I entered "rabbit", it came back with "your password is one of the 500 most common passwords. It could be cracked almost instantly". "rabbit5" would take two hours, "$rabbit5" would take 38 days, and "$rabbitZ5" would take 237 years. It's quite enlightening to see what a difference three simple characters can make.

Australian Price Gouging Inquiry Targets Apple, Microsoft And Others

Getting a new laptop or buying a new license for an operating system is often cheaper in the U.S. than in most other countries. Europeans, for example, are used to paying a hefty premium for Apple products and the situation is similar in Australia, where the cheapest MacBook Air currently costs about 15% more than in the United States. Now, however, the Australian government is starting a parliamentary inquiry into these pricing schemes. According to Australia's Sydney Morning Herald, the politicians behind this inquiry hope that calling these companies out publicly will result in prices dropping.

Ask AC: HTC One S voice mail notification issue

Ingram1225 asks in the HTC One S forums,

Anyone have voice mail notification issues? Like always saying you have voice mail? Seems to be a rampant HTC issue with all their phones.

I did listen to all my voicemails... even deleted the saved ones. My One S keeps notifying me that I have a new voicemail... and when I check there are no new voicemails.

As Ingram1225 mentioned, this is a quirk on a lot of HTC Android phones, and not particular to the One S. When you activate or put your SIM in a new HTC Sense phone, sometimes you get a voice mail notification. It happens seemingly at random, and nobody is 100-percent sure how to prevent it. Good thing it's easy to fix!

Grab another phone, it could be a landline, another cell phone, or even a call from Google Talk, and call your number. Don't answer it, you need to let it go to voicemail. When it does, leave a message. Now go back to your phone with the stuck voice mail notification. You should now have two voice mails showing, the "stuck" one and the real one you just left. Call your voice mail service from your HTC Sense phone, and listen to and delete the new message. That should fix your problem, and you're good to go until you get another new HTC phone.
